. interesting. president obama and speaker boehner. nobody else. with 24 days before a year-end deadline, "the new york times" says boehner made the request to clear the negotiation room going forward, leaving it up to himself and the president to reach a deal to avoid automatic tax hikes and deep spending cuts. and while the two men may be negotiating privately, yesterday the president took his message to the public, visiting a local virginia family as a part of his my2k social media campaign, sitting around the kitchen table. he told the family he was optimistic. >> the message that i think we all want to send to members of congress is, this is a solvable problem. the senate has already passed a bill that would make sure the middle-class taxes don't go up next year by a single dime. just to be clear, i'm not going to sign any package that somehow prevents the top rate from going up for folks at the top 2%. but i do remain optimistic that we can get something done that is good for families like this one and that is good for the american economy. >> what great news, i think. don't you think so

criticizing him a week ago for running campaign events instead of sitting down and talking to john boehner. he's talking to john boehner now and we're all better off because of it. >> he's still going out and talking to the people with his message. my point is congress will deal with this fiscal mess one way or another. if they get it done, it will be a great accomplishment for everybody. we may get immigration reform since republicans seem to now want immigration reform. i'm not sure what else you can get from congress in this atmosphere. what i worry about obama in the second term is not arrogance and complacency, all that may be true. i wonder what you may get done with congress still in a state of gridlock. >> this is the biggest fear of republicans we cut a deal in the short term on fiscal cliff without any real spending reform or tax reform and won't have enough time or political will to get the real reforms that need to take place and republicans raise taxes and get no spending cuts. >> that's the biggest fear of democrats we don't deal with thi this. >> eugene, we were showing the tape

from going forward. and the reality is last year speaker boehner set an important resident. it's called the boehner rule. one dollar in spending increase for one dollar for debt limit increase. you balance the budge net 10 years without raising taxes. the republicans aren't giving this up any time and neither are democrats. megyn: do you see irony that the president wants to eliminate congress from raising the debt limit. when he was a senator he said in part we are debating raising a debt limit and he said this is a sign of leadership failure. increasing america's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. washington is shifting the burden on the backs of our children and grandchildren. america has a debt problem and a failure of leadership and america deserves better. >> it's true when bill clinton left office in 2000 we had you are plus and the deficit would have been eliminated as we sit here today what changed that was the republican president and congress. what put us on the path we are on now is not democrats. we would have no collective debt at all if we had left in place
